Introduction

In the last century, the first modern air-conditioner was invented and people at that time only cared about its cooling effectiveness. Over one hundred year of improvement, the HVAC system has become more popular and effective. It is now one of the most important components in a building that greatly affects the occupant’s well-being and the building’s energy performance. In a typical office building, the HVAC system accounts for 35-40% of total building energy consumption. With the significant surge of energy costs, in consequence, a HVAC system should be designed with energy efficiency in mind.

There are two ways to improve the energy efficiency of HVAC systems: equipment enhancement and control optimization. The latter can greatly increase the energy performance without excessive investment. However, there are significant challenges in designing efficient control strategies. Most HVAC systems are complex and considerably affected by weather, occupancy, building operation and building envelope. Control strategies should be designed with caution to minimize problems during operation.

This webinar will give an introduction on different control approaches and present some recommendations for high-performance, green building projects.
